The Cardinal Virtues
Led by Fr. Yerick Mendez
“A virtue is an habitual and firm disposition to do the good. It allows the person not only to perform good acts, but to give the best of himself.” (CCC 1803) “Four virtues play a pivotal role and accordingly are called “cardinal”; all the others are grouped around them. They are: prudence, justice, fortitude, and temperance. “If anyone loves righteousness, [Wisdom’s] labors are virtues; for she teaches temperance and prudence, justice, and courage.”(Wis. 8:7) These virtues are praised under other names in many passages of Scripture.”(CCC 1805)
This Lent, our Bible Study we will take a deeper look at what the Bible teaches about the Cardinal Virtues and how to best live them on a daily basis. Lent is the perfect time to return to the school of virtue and renew our commitment to become the people God wants us to be. Come and Join us. All sessions are 1 hour long and will be fully bilingual (English/Spanish). I hope to see you there.

Las Virtudes Cardenales

“La virtud es una disposición habitual y firme a hacer el bien. Permite a la persona no sólo realizar actos buenos, sino dar lo mejor de sí misma.” (CIC 1803) “Cuatro virtudes desempeñan un papel fundamental. Por eso se las llama “cardinales”; todas las demás se agrupan en torno a ellas. Estas son la prudencia, la justicia, la fortaleza y la templanza. “¿Amas la justicia? Las virtudes son el fruto de sus esfuerzos, pues ella enseña la templanza y la prudencia, la justicia y la fortaleza” (Sb 8, 7). Bajo otros nombres, estas virtudes son alabadas en numerosos pasajes de la Escritura.” (1805)
En esta Cuaresma nuestro estudio Bíblico examinará mas profjundamente lo que la Biblia enseña sobre las virtudes cardenales y como vivirlas diariamente. La Cuaresma es el tiempo ideal para volver a la escuela de la virtud y reneovar nuestro compromiso de ser la persona que Dios quiere que seamos. Ven a estar con nosotros. Todas la sesiones duran una hora y son bilingües (Ingles/Español). Espero verlos.

Lenten Regulations, 2026
- Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of abstinence from meat as well as days of fast, when only one full meal is allowed. On days of fast, two other meatless meals may be taken according to one’s needs, but together they should not equal another full meal.
- The other Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence from meat.
- The obligation to abstain from meat begins at age fourteen (14) and does not cease.
- The obligation to fast begins at age eighteen (18) and ceases at age fifty-nine (59).
Please note:
Although the faithful may excuse themselves from fast and abstinence for a just cause, there is an obligation to substitute another penance in its place. No Catholic should lightly excuse him/herself from these Lenten obligations.
Reglamentos de Cuaresma, 2026
- El Miércoles de Ceniza y el Viernes Santo son días de ayuno y abstinencia de carne, en los que solo se permite una comida completa. En días de ayuno, se pueden tomar dos comidas sin carne según las necesidades de la persona, pero juntas no deberían equivaler a otra comida completa.
- Todos los viernes de Cuaresma son días de abstinencia de carne.
- La obligación de abstenerse de la carne comienza a los catorce (14) años y no cesa.
- La obligación de ayunar comienza a los dieciocho (18) años y termina a los cincuenta y nueve (59).
Por favor, tenga en cuenta: Aunque los fieles pueden excusarse del ayuno y la abstinencia por causa justa, existe la obligación de sustituir por otra penitencia en su lugar. Ningún católico debería eximirse a la ligera de estas obligaciones de cuaresma.

VISITING THE SICK IN HOSPITALS/NURSING HOMES:
At one time a parish priest could enter the hospital and ask for a list of the Catholic patients from his parish. THAT IS NO LONGER THE CASE. With the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), a federal law protecting sensitive patient health information from disclosure without consent, it is now impossible to locate patients in the hospital/nursing home without the patients consent. The only way that we are able to know if someone is in the hospital is if the patient or a member of the family tells us that they would love a visit from the parish priest and receive the sacraments. In hospitals where there are chaplains, visits are possible because they are employees of the health care system. So, please notify the rectory (781-3656) if you or a loved one would like a visit in the hospital, nursing home or homebound.
VISITAS A ENFERMOS EN HOSPITALES/RESIDENCIAS DE ANCIANOS:
Hubo un tiempo en que un párroco podía entrar al hospital y pedir la lista de los pacientes
católicos de su parroquia. Eso ya no es así. Con la Ley de Portabilidad y Responsabilidad del Seguro Médico (HIPAA), una ley federal que protege la información confidencial de salud de los pacientes contra su divulgación sin consentimiento, ahora es imposible localizar a los pacientes en el hospital u hogar de ancianos sin su consentimiento. La única manera de saber si alguien está hospitalizado es si el paciente o un familiar nos dice que le encantaría recibir la visita del párroco y los sacramentos. En los hospitales con capellanes, las visitas son posibles porque son empleados del sistema de salud. Por lo tanto, por favor notifique a la casa parroquial (413 781-3656) si usted o un ser querido desea una visita en el hospital, residencia de ancianos o en su hogar.
